Why I Wear a Hat All of the Time
Why do I wear a hat all of the time?
I’m Jewish—boom, answered. But it goes a little deeper than that.
Whether you know me or don’t, you know I always have something on my head. A kippah (yarmulke), a trusty running cap, a bucket hat—there’s always somethin’ perched on my melon unless I’m in the shower or in bed.
In the Jewish tradition, headcoverings are meant to promote a mindset defined as “yir’at shamayim“—usually translated as “fear of heaven.”
My own personal translation is “abounding awe of my own insignificance.”
While a heavy concept, I never want it to be far from my mind. This is why I wear my own personal sticky note reminder in the form of a hat. Part religious item, part invisibility cloak, part security blanket.
I know hats aren’t for everyone, so what reminds you of the enormity of reality and your place in it?

I practice Soul Craft with a Christian mystic twist. From how I set up rooms in my home, which walls get which artwork, to how I engage with the world around me. There’s this perpetual mirrored images bouncing around, inner world and outer world, physical and metaphysical, constantly invited to sing the same tune.
